Reiki Energy Healing
the ancient art of healing touch
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is, in its simplest translation, universal life energy. It has also been referred to in other cultures as light, chi, prana, and spirit. It is the life force that exists in all things. The practice of Reiki is the art and science of channeling this universal life energy to promote spiritual, mental, and physical well-being. Reiki is not associated with any particular religion and can be used alongside any spiritual system.
As Reiki involves directing the natural flow of universal energy, it can best be likened to recharging a battery. When a battery's energy supply is low, it doesn't function well. By introducing a charge to it, it can once again run on its own. Reiki works much the same way. If you are suffering from an illness (physical, mental, or spiritual), your energy supply is lessened, Reiki works to assist you in bringing your energy level back up to its natural flow, thereby enhancing your own natural healing powers. Reiki practitioners do not suffer from energy depletion, as they are trained to channel energy from the outside environment, not from their personal supply.
There are many "schools" of Reiki but the basic principles Reiki practitioners try to abide by are pretty much universal. Here's a loose translation:
Just for today, I will not worry
Just for today, I will not be angry
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings
Just for today, I will do my work honestly
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing
In order to learn Reiki, an attunement is done by a Reiki master. This opens you up to the Reiki energy and connects you forever to the Divine Reiki Source. Attunements are done at three levels of Reiki. The Attunement is permanant and cannot be lost or taken away. Reiki is generally divided into three degrees (although there are some styles that use four and a few styles that use as many as seven).
In Reiki I, the student learns to use the reiki and to heal using hands on healing for self and others.
In Reiki II, the student learns the three Reiki Symbols of Power, Harmony and Connection, and learns distant healing for those not physically present.
Reiki III is the Master/Teacher's degree. A Master is someone who knows the Reiki system, and has been trained to teach and Attune others to Reiki.
I'm a second degree Reiki healer, trained to perform both hands-on healing and distance healing. I especially enjoy working with cats. Reiki works just as well with animals & plants as it does with people and in my experience cats are especially sensitive to Reiki energy. In my online forum, the Circle of Healing Purrs, I perform distance healing for cats, along with a loosely connected group of "guest healers" that stop in whenever they can. There is absolutely no charge for this service; we are all happy to do it. As in life generally, but especially in Reiki, "what goes around comes around" and the Reiki healer often gains as much from sending Reiki as does the recipient.
Objects can also be infused with Reiki. I'm a jewelry maker and I can feel the transfer of energy as I form gemstone beads and sterling silver wire and charms into earrings and necklaces. And I've met many Reiki healers who experience similar feelings while sewing, cooking, gardening, writing, or doing any kind of hands on work. Reiki is truly a gift that keeps on giving :-)
